Waterway Cargo Affects Export Of Indian Bicycles

Despite heavy demand of Indian bicycles in Myanmar, export of bicycle including spare parts from India to Myanmar through Moreh has been on the decline.

The introduction of the waterway cargo between India and Myanmar was reportedly the main reason. The waterway cargo was a follow up of the Indo-Myanmar Free Trade Policy. Myanmar has developed three international ports at Kyaukpyu, Kalaguak and Dawei.

Among these, Kyaukpyu port, which lies on the route of Indo-China trade waterway, has been serving as a corridor of Mekong-India trade.

This port has boosted India’s trade with the South East Asia countries. Bicycle and its parts was one of the main trade items which India exported to Myanmar through Moreh, Manipur.

The items were legally or illegally exported to Myanmar with attractive profits. Transportation of trade items from India including bicycles which used to ferry through Moreh has been now transported in this water way as it is found to be shorter and more profitable. This trade activity has gradually decreased in Moreh since the past five years.

Besides, a new motorcycle of Myanmar called Kenbaw-125 has also caught the attention of small traders in Moreh and small neighbouring town of Myanmar because of its affordability.
